Improving Evidence about Software Technologies: A Look at Model-Based Testing

Abstract: Model-based testing (MBT) approaches help automatically generate test cases using models extracted from software artifacts, and hold the promise to greatly affect how we build software. A review of the literature shows that certain specialized domains are applying MBT, but it does not yet seem to be a mainstream approach. The authors therefore conducted a systematic review of the literature to investigate how much evidence is available on MBT's costs and benefits, especially regarding how these techniques comp… Show more

“…Hence, we needed some framework inside which we can compare our techniques and tools. We, then, searched for articles comparing MBT techniques and tools [21], [1], [22]. Eventually, we followed [21] and extended the set of dimensions defined by the author to base the comparison.…”

“…Furthermore, if we also want Model-Based Testing (MBT) to test both units and the complete system with tool support, then the informed results rapidly approaches to zero. In [1] and [2] we could not find such issues being addressed, although [3] deals with them. Hence, in this paper we address the problem outlined above, in the context of space application software.…”

“…This transformation is performed based on existing algorithms [15] combined with different test coverage strategies [16]. The results are unprecedented guarantees and automation [17]. As such, MBT approaches support the amenability of test cases by the automatic generation of scripts.…”

“…Thus more studies that evaluate and compare testing techniques and tools are needed [2]- [4]. However, to make sure that the resulting body of evidence can yield the right guidelines, the evaluative case studies should:…”
