Abstract-At INPE1 researchers and software engineers have been using Statechart-based testing for some time to test on-board satellite software. On the other hand, a group of researchers at CIFASIS 2 and Flowgate Consulting have been applying Z-based testing for unit testing. Both groups started to compare their approaches and tools a year ago. What started as a comparison to share ideas and results, is now turning into the realization that actually both techniques complement and benefit from each other, yielding a more effective and wider Model-Based Testing (MBT) approach. In this paper we present the results obtained so far in comparing and complementing these two MBT techniques.

Abstract-Mechatronic systems integrate mechanical, electrical and software subsystems. They are increasingly important in mission-critical infrastructures in different domains including automotive, healthcare, energy and transportation sectors. As such, the adequate testing and validation of such infrastructures are of prime importance. Mechatronic systems testing has been supported by different isolated industrial and research approaches including automated test infrastructures, model-based testing, and test execution engines. While these approaches have individual benefits, they are usually applied in isolation, suffering from different weaknesses. This paper reports on an integrated model-driven approach for mechatronic systems testing, where existing approaches are combined and enhanced. The result is unprecedented levels of automation and testability. We discuss the design and implementation of our approach, illustrating its use with a hybrid calculator example.

Such guidelines could be obtained by doing secondary studies on a body of evidence consisting of case studies evaluating and comparing testing techniques and tools. However, such a body of evidence is also lacking. In this paper, we will make a first step towards creating such body of evidence by defining a general methodological evaluation framework that can simplify the design of case studies for comparing software testing tools, and make the results more precise, reliable, and easy to compare. Using this framework, (1) software testing practitioners can more easily define case studies through an instantiation of the framework, (2) results can be better compared since they are all executed according to a similar design, (3) the gap in existing work on methodological evaluation frameworks will be narrowed, and (4) a body of evidence will be initiated. By means of validating the framework, we will present successful applications of this methodological framework to various case studies for evaluating testing tools in an industrial environment with real objects and real subjects.
