Improving Healthcare Workers' Adherence to Surgical Safety Checklist: The Impact of a Short Training

Abstract: BackgroundAlthough surgery is essential in healthcare, a significant number of patients suffer unfair harm while undergoing surgery. Many of these originate from failures in non-technical aspects, especially communication among operators. A surgical safety checklist is a simple tool that helps to reduce surgical adverse events, but even if it is fast to fill out, its compilation is often neglected by the healthcare workers because of unprepared cultural background. The present study aims to value the efficacy … Show more

“…However, there are some important lessons emerging from our case study in relation to health workforce governance and new approaches to organizational protection measures. For instance, ad-hoc action at the organizational level, like the development and implementation of short HCW training programmes, may help to respond effectively to new emergent needs ( 70 ).…”

“…The opposite occurred in 2016, when there was a shorter time from beginning of anesthesia to beginning of surgery, and longer anesthetic-surgical time among patients with completion (partial or total) of the checklists. Researchers from Italy identified an association between length of hospital stay and adherence to the checklist, mainly justified by the clinical conditions of patients that result in greater clinical risk and, successively, in the occurrence of adverse events and prolonged hospitalization time28 .We highlight the low completeness of the checklist applied in the operating room in 2013, and little improvement in partial or total completion for the year 2016, including for the instrument applied in the inpatient units. This result reiterates that the implementation of surgical safety checklists takes time and requires persistence and strategic planning22 .Adherence to the application of the checklist and its completeness are related to the value attributed by the team and to the institution's management processes.…”

“…According to Ferorelli et al to educate operators with some theoretical lessons can improve healthcare workers' adherence to risk management tools. 2 In the psychiatric department most of the reported events occurred, most of which were aggressions. In the similar hospitals' IRS described by Tricarico and Ramirez, general medical services and surgery theatres are the bigger contributors to IRS.…”

“…1 Around one in twenty patients are exposed to preventable harm, causing additional hospital stays and negligence claims. 2 Risk management in healthcare needs a systemic and systematic approach and requires a suitable informative system. 3,4 In this context, the incident reporting system (IRS) has been recognized as essential for improving patient safety.…”
