Improving Lifelong Learning by Fostering Students’ Learning Strategies at University

Abstract: The foundation of how students usually learn is laid early in their academic lives. However, many or even most students do not primarily rely on those learning strategies that are most favorable from a scientific point of view. To change students’ learning behavior when they start their university education, we developed a computer-based adaptive learning environment to train favorable learning strategies and change students’ habits using them. This learning environment pursues three main goals: acquiring decl… Show more

“…As Winne and Marzouk noted (2019, p. 698), "Every postsecondary institution that we know of offers some" degree of support (workshops, coaching, online materials) to help students develop effective learning strategies. We suspect that this support focuses primarily on providing students with knowledge about learning strategies (e.g., based on the proliferation of books on the topic; e.g., Agarwal & Bain, 2019;Brown et al, 2014;McGuire, 2018;Rhodes et al, 2019) (but see Biwer et al, 2020, andEndres et al, 2020 for recent notable exceptions). By contrast, the KBCP framework outlined herein (see also McDaniel & Einstein, 2020) proposes that the key components of knowledge, belief, commitment, and planning are needed to maximize training in the use and transfer of effective learning strategies.…”

“…More controlled research is needed to illuminate the effectiveness of the KBCP training format for supporting students' self-regulation of effective learning strategies and subsequent achievement outcomes in their courses. Initial studies along these lines have recently been reported by Biwer et al (2020) and Endres et al (2020) for learning strategy training programs that include elements aligning with the KBCP framework.…”

“…Trainings can be defined as temporary, structured interventions in which an activity is repeatedly performed with the aim to enhance abilities, skills, and/or the usage of strategies across specific situations and materials (see Fries & Souvignier, 2020). These training programs can be offered online (e.g., Endres et al, 2021), making them inexpensive and widely available. The current Special Issue expands on this interest in training of self-regulated learning.…”

“…For example, explaining a novel learning strategy (e.g., imagery) can lead to an increase in memory performance (Brehmer et al, 2007), yet, practicing the learning strategy contributes more to learning. To successfully apply cognitive learning strategies in a self-regulatory fashion, learners need to identify and apply the cognitive learning strategy that specifically fits the learning situation at hand (see Endres et al, 2021).…”
