Improving Mental Health Services: A 50-Year Journey from Randomized Experiments to Artificial Intelligence and Precision Mental Health

Abstract: This conceptual paper describes the current state of mental health services, identifies critical problems, and suggests how to solve them. I focus on the potential contributions of artificial intelligence and precision mental health to improving mental health services. Toward that end, I draw upon my own research, which has changed over the last half century, to highlight the need to transform the way we conduct mental health services research. I identify exemplars from the emerging literature on artificial in… Show more

“…Understanding the actual needs and preferences of patients, as well as clinicians, is a simple first step but one for which a clear picture does not actually exist today. As mental health services continue to adopt, new technologies will likely continue to accelerate change (Bickman 2020 ).…”

“…It is an honor to comment on Leonard Bickman's (2020) Festschrift paper in the special issue "The Future of Children's Mental Health Services". Based on his long and outstanding research career, Dr. Bickman presents an exciting overview of his achievements and offers suggestions for future directions in mental health services research.…”

“…Again, machine learning approaches and AI are a proposed solution, however, the importance of the precise analysis of causality is also highlighted. Applying AI may overcome the problem of low internal validity in observational data, allowing RCTs to be replaced by naturalistic trials and augmented by idiographic research (Bickman 2020).…”

“…Patients will receive an intelligent diagnosis and be given a personalized diagnosis and treatment plan, which will substantially shorten their treatment time, improve their satisfaction with the medical treatment, and reduce potential conflicts between doctors and patients [21,22]. At the same time, artificial intelligence also has great potential in disease prevention and drug research and development [23][24][25][26][27][28][29]. Educational artificial intelligence is an emerging field combining artificial intelligence with learning science [30].…”
