Improving Oil Recovery Efficiency in Niger Delta Reservoirs Using Corn Starch as a Local Polymer

Abstract: Polymer flooding is a chemical enhanced oil recovery method that improves the recovery of oil by controlling the mobility of water to oil phase. It uses polymer solutions to increase the viscosity of the displacing water thereby decreasing water/oil mobility ratio (Speight, 2013). The volumetric and displacement sweep efficiencies are positively affected by polymer flooding. The viscosity of the aqueous phase is increased due to the molecular size and structure of the polymer used. The main objective of this r… Show more

“…After the oil saturated the core sample, it began to push on the water (brine) from inside the core, allowing it to exit and accumulate in the cylinder. This process was continued until excess oil (just few drops) was discharged [ 53 ]. At this point, the oil injection process was stopped, and the volume of water produced during the oil injection was equal to the original oil in place (OOIP).…”

“…The output from water flooding is accumulated in the 50 ml cylinder and its quantity is estimated every 3 minutes. The water flooding is then resumed until one pore volume (1 PV) of water was injected [26].…”

“…Currently, there are 32 ASP projects worldwide, with 19 of them specifically implemented in China [ 15 ]. Technically, up-to-date ASP flooding can result in oil recovery that is 10% higher than polymer flooding and 20% higher than water flooding [ 16 ]. The existing stockpiles available for ASP flooding reach over 8300 million tons worldwide, with the Daqing oil field in China holding the potential to extract more than 1400 million tons alone [ 17 ].…”
