Improving Outcomes-Based Engineering Education in Australia

Abstract: Graduate attributes are now a ubiquitous feature of higher education in Australia and internationally, and have been part of engineering education for more than a decade. The idea of graduate attributes is an apparently simple concept, focussing on educational outcomes, rather than inputs and process. While there is evidence of some benefits in engineering education arising from the introduction of outcomes-based accreditation, there is also evidence of many shortcomings of the graduate attributes approach. The… Show more

“…Dunbar, Brooks, and KubickaMiller (2006) assert that communication-based competencies are not only of relevance to communication departments in universities, but also essential to some disciplines. These skills seem to have particular salience in areas where direct industry relevance is recognised, such as business (Brink & Costigan, 2015), engineering (Palmer & Ferguson, 2008) and science (Chan, 2011).…”

“…This system places a strong emphasis on the development of undergraduate students' potential and soft skills, with the goal of producing graduates who not only have a solid engineering foundation but also are aware of the most recent information on engineering technology and practices. Subsequently, they will be more responsible for changes in the surrounding environment, such as social, environmental, and community changes (Embi 2010;Nor et al, 2005;Heywood, 1997;Palmer et al, 2008).…”

“…Outcome Based Education (OBE) approach has become one of the prime criteria for the quality enhancement, sustainment and accreditation across the globe, more specifically in India as per the statutory bodies [1][2]. The OBE is the guiding beacon to achieve the Graduate Attributes (GAs) or Program Outcomes (POs) defined by different accreditation agencies [3]. Having said that, need of the hour is to customize the OBE to socio-cultural challenges and higher education framework in India to ensure balanced approach towards teaching, administration and research work [4].…”
