Improving Prediction of Career Adjustment With Measures of Career Development

Abstract: In the first part of the article, the major findings and the problems of criterion‐related validity research in the field of career development assessment are analyzed. Regarding predictive validity, it is shown that it is more difficult to prove mediumterm and long‐term effects of career maturity on career adjustment than short‐term effects, and that this is connected with shortcomings in research and theory. In the second part of the article, empirical evidence is provided for the assumption that self‐concep… Show more

“…Based on this multivariate comparison, the comments to follow suggest several reasons why the educational and vocational outcomes of students with disabilities are unlikely to improve without significant career development interventions. Seifert (1994) explained that level of career maturity in high school directly affects a student's ability to cope with the psychosocial demands encountered in making the transition into the adult world of work. In this study, much as in Gillespie's (1993), the career decision-making self-efficacy beliefs of special education students are significantly lower than those of their general education peers.…”

“…In this questionnaire, the career decision-making component is taken from the Career Maturity Inventory (Seifert, 1986) [ 53 ] and consists of 12 items. The career planning component is taken from the Career Development Inventory (Seifert, 1985) [ 54 ], with 22 items in total. Career exploration consists of two parts, one of which is taken from the Career Development Inventory, with a total of 26 items.…”

“…A good faculty affiliation and a stable position in professional faculties relieve career anxiety and indecision (Daniels et al 2011;Weinstein et al 2002 ). However, uncertainty in young adulthood occupational expectations results in higher drop-out rates and lower occupational attainment (Seifert 1994;Sikora 2018). Tolerance of career uncertainty plays a great role in career satisfaction and happenstance skills (Kim et al 2016).…”

“…The pressures on academic career progress prioritise researchers' early science productivity and impact (Mills and Paulson 2014). The career development tasks of the exploratory stage have an impact on ultimate career stages (Seifert 1994). For biologists, publishing in early career has a significant advantage for future career survival rate (Afonso 2016).…”
