Improving Safety in Medical Devices and Systems

Abstract: Abstract-We need to improve healthcare technologieselectronic patient records, medical devices -by reducing use error and, in particular, unnoticed errors, since unnoticed errors cannot be managed by clinicians to reduce patient harm. Every system we have examined has multiple opportunities for safer design, suggesting a safety scoring system.Making safety scores visible will enable all stakeholders (regulators, procurers, clinicians, incident investigators, journalists, and of course patients) to be more info… Show more

“…This is a major concern when users want to share their self-curated data with health care professionals. The problems that arise from badly validated and designed data input forms have been studied extensively, and design guidelines have been formulated, but many app developers (and many medical device manufacturers) still fail to adhere to them [20].…”

“…This result may be used by manufacturers (who wish to design safer systems), to procurers (who wish to buy safer systems), and to patients (who wish to have safer treatment). In the long run, one could imagine that assessments of safety would be displayed prominently on devices [9], thus increasing awareness and hence would encourage more appropriate choices of designs for the uses to which they may be put.…”

“…It was explained that the patients were given the convenience of being able to find information, discuss, consult without having to come to the location and be able to register with a health unit such as a clinic or hospital. The role of information technology makes stakeholders in the health business increasingly limitless, this has a very good impact on health workers and business owners who can use it (Thimbleby, 2013). In European countries, the use of information technology can reduce the administrative costs of healthcare providers by 35 percent and provide increased comfort and satisfaction for patients (Deloitte, 2015).…”
