Improving solar wind forecasts using data assimilation

Abstract: <p>Data assimilation has been used in Numerical Weather Prediction models with great success, and it can be seen that the improvement of data assimilation methods has gone hand-in-hand with improvements in weather forecasting skill. The implementation of data assimilation for solar wind forecasting is still in its infancy and is still underused in the field. Hence, it is important to investigate the optimal implementation of these methods to improve our understanding of the solar wind.</p&… Show more

“…Examples of these fields are meteorology and oceanography, and, in space sciences, ionospheric and radiation belt physics (Bennett, 1992;Ghil and Malanotte-Rizzoli, 1991;Egbert and Bennett, 1996;Kalnay, 2003;Rigler et al, 2004;Schunk et al, 2004;Kondrashov et al, 2007). Examples of DA applications targeting specifically the interplanetary space environments are Schrijver and DeRosa (2003), Mendoza et al (2006), , Innocenti et al (2011), Skandrani et al (2014), Lang and Owens (2019), and Lang et al (2020).…”
