Improving the Climate Resilience of Rice Farming in Flood-Prone Areas through Azolla Biofertilizer and Saline-Tolerant Varieties

Abstract: Rice farming in coastal areas is often victim to flooding as a result of climate change. Low-cost adaptation strategies are required to increase resilience and rice productivity in these flood-prone coastal areas. In this study, enriched Azolla extract (EAE) liquid biofertilizers, combined with selected stress-tolerant rice varieties, were tested in farmers’ fields in Pangandaran, West Java from June to October 2020. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of EAE in increasing the yield of different … Show more

“…Azolla's high organic C content contributes to the increase in organic C. According to Thapa and Poudel (2021), 90% of Azolla is degraded in 4 weeks. The process of degradation and mineralization will produce soil organic C. This is in line with previous research by Simarmata et al (2021) that the application of 10 t/h Azolla can increase soil organic carbon by 0.30%. Applying inorganic fertilizers alone gives results that are not significantly different from the control or no treatment because it does not contain organic matter.…”

“…The foliar application of nutrients provides plants with readily available nutrients, promoting faster growth and increased productivity by reducing the distance the nutrients travel within the plant (Simarmata et al, 2021). In addition, the combined fertilisation methods further improve plant growth by providing essential micronutrients that may be lacking in granule fertilisers.…”

“…Pengadaan POC sangat penting dengan beberapa alasan antara lain; memenuhi kebutuhan pupuk yang terbatas ketersediaannya khususnya pupuk buatan (Simarmata et al, 2021). Penggunaan POC yang seluruh bahan berasal dari bahan organik sangat ramah lingkungan dan aman terhadap ekologi (Jamilah et al, 2014).…”
