Improving the learning experience of power system protection students using computer-based simulations and practical experiments

Abstract: Abstract-This paper presents a survey on the activities carried out to improve the learning experience of electrical engineering undergraduate students in power system protection unit in Curtin University, Australia. The unit was conducted initially based on lectures and tutorials where only two sessions on computer simulation and one session of laboratory demonstration were conducted. In academic year of 2013, to improve the learning experience of students, several computer-based simulations and laboratory ex… Show more

“…Some research results implement a protection system platform between digital and physical directly on some specific devices [11][12][13][14][15], specifically implementation on distributed generation [11] and on protection relay experiments [12][13][14][15]. A study for protection system study to obtain the optimal operation scheme in distributed generation is proposed in Sisworahardjo et al [12], where the physical-distributed generation is integrated into the device, while two independent distribution systems are simulated in a digital real-time simulator.…”

“…A study for protection system study to obtain the optimal operation scheme in distributed generation is proposed in Sisworahardjo et al [12], where the physical-distributed generation is integrated into the device, while two independent distribution systems are simulated in a digital real-time simulator. To enhance the learning process using protection relays, a proposal and implementation to test the operation of characteristic relays [12,13]. Although industrial relays are used in this laboratory, the simulator is capable of displaying pre-fault and post-fault fault signals.…”

“…Simulation tools have been applied in learning at universities such as the Electrical Transient Program at Curtin University. Simulations are used in project-based Electric Power System Protection learning, in the field of electric power system studies (Shahnia et al, 2014). In line with the research conducted by Gashimov, he has carried out simulation trials for controlled shunt reactor modeling for experimental loss measurement and dynamic operating performance of the system using a computer program (Gashimov et al, 2015).…”
