Improving the production efficiency of high-titania slag in Ti extraction process: fluxing effect on formation of pseudobrookite

Abstract: We investigated the carbothermic reduction process of ilmenite ore at 1873 K with flux addition. Without flux, the pseudobrookite phase with a high melting temperature was precipitated during ilmenite smelting. This could be the main reason for decreased reduction of iron in ilmenite. To accelerate reduction of ilmenite, two factors were considered. One is increasing the reduction driving force during smelting. Activity of FeO is the major factor to control reduction in driving force. The other factor is delay… Show more

“…In particular, soda is added to the reduction charge [ [50] , [51] , [52] ], which is both a reduction catalyst and a flux that reduces the viscosity of the slag. The introduction of sodium oxide (Na 2 O) into the mixture leads to the formation of low-melting sodium titanates (Na 2 TiO 3 with a melting point of 1030 °C, Na 2 Ti 2 O 5 –985 °C, and Na 2 Ti 3 O 7 –1128 °C).…”

“…5,6 Na 2 O fluxing in the form of Na 2 CO 3 can improve the recovery and kinetics of iron separation from SiO 2 -Na 2 O-TiO 2 slag that is titania-rich during the carbothermic reduction of ilmenite. 7,8 The formation of soluble sodium compounds is crucial in numerous metal extraction processes. 9,10 In the extraction of vanadium from titania-rich slag, the aim is to form sodium aluminosilicate, which can be leached to separate vanadium and titanium from impurities.…”
