Improving the Quality of Provided Care: Lessons Learned From Auditing Neonatal Stabilization

Abstract: Video and physiological parameter recording of neonatal stabilization was implemented at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Leiden University Medical Center. In order to improve documentation and the quality of care provided during neonatal transition, we implemented weekly plenary audits reviewing recordings of neonatal stabilization in 2014. In audits, provided care is reviewed, discussing, among others, mask technique, compliance to the prevailing local guideline, and clinical decision making an… Show more

“…The evidence so far shows that using the RFM in the delivery room has raised clinically important research questions and provided insights into scientific knowledge gaps. 17,18 Our exploratory survey had several limitations. The training and review strategies and the total number of resuscitations performed using the RFM differed by centre.…”

“…Regular reviews of recordings of neonatal resuscitations may be useful, as this would improve the skills needed for successful delivery room management. 13 , 17 These related to cognitive skills, such as knowledge of physiology and clinical decision‐making, technical skills, including mask techniques and interpreting RFM signals, and behavioural skills like communication. Having combined these results with the feedback from our respondents, we suggest the following regime for RFM training.…”

“…If available, videolaryngoscopy (InfantView, Vyaire, Chicago, Illinois, USA) recordings were integrated with the eye-tracking recording using the same format as during video reflections on neonatal stabilisation, performed weekly at the local NICU. 8 Healthcare staff openly addressed both what went right and what could be improved. To conclude the video reflection, healthcare staff discussed what they had learnt.…”

“…Since 2014 weekly and plenary review sessions are held where recordings of neonatal stabilization are reviewed, focused on mostly on technical aspects ( Figure 1 ). Recording and reviewing resuscitation is considered highly beneficial in our department for learning and improving resuscitation skills and is recommended by participating providers ( 64 ). It has proven to be a valuable tool for asking and giving objective feedback and to have educational benefits ( 29 , 47 ).…”
