Impulse control disorders in Parkinson’s disease: A systematic review on the psychometric properties of the existing measures

Abstract: Background A significant percentage of patients suffering from Parkinson’s Disease (PD) experience Impulse Control Disorders (ICDs), contributing to reduced quality of life. As they can be managed by reducing the dopamine dosage, the detection of their presence is crucial for PD treatment plan. Nevertheless, they tend to be under-recognized in clinical practice, since routine screening is not common–despite existing instruments that may support clinicians. This work presents a systematic review on… Show more

“…It is important to keep in mind that not all ICD in patients are induced by medications, and those cases are perfectly suitable for psychological interventions. ICD and related disorders are socially inappropriate; they interrupt everyday activities and quality of life of patients, and they can have even greater negative impact on social life of patients (i.e., isolating themselves even more), so it is of priority to recognize it early, use preventive measures, and introduce them into psychological treatment (Izzo, Donati, Ramat, & Primi, 2019). Neurologists and primary physicians usually cannot recognize from the beginning triggering factors such as medication dosage, and they can misinterpret behavioural problems as normal changes or as a primary psychiatric disorder, while in truth, problems are possibly induced by dopaminergic therapy (Molde et al, 2018).…”

“…So it will be good to identify ICDs in patients of Parkinson disease to make therapeutic decisions and avoiding important social, economic and legal problems for patients. 16,17 Younger and masculine preponderance in control group might be the reason behind more addiction pattern-with time and age, these issues are usually resolved or at least minimised. Zhang et al study compared two groups of PD instead -one with manifest ICD and other without in which earlier onset of the disease, higher dose of dopamine agonist, severe cognitive impairment and dyskinesia were independent risk factors associated with impulse control related disorders (ICRDs).…”
