Impulsivity: Four ways five factors are not basic to addiction

Abstract: Several impulsivity-related models have been applied to understanding the vulnerability to addiction. While there is a growing consensus that impulsivity is multifaceted, debate continues as to the precise number of facets and, more critically, which are most relevant to explaining the addiction-risk profile. In many ways, the current debate mirrors that which took place in the personality literature (e.g., Eysenck's 'Big Three' versus Costa and McCrae's 'Big Five').Indeed, many elements of this debate are rel… Show more

“…Impulsivity can be defined as a predisposition to respond to external stimuli internally with unplanned reactions; the impulsive reaction occurs without taking into account the possible negative consequences for the impulsive individual or for others (Gullo, Loxton, & Dawe, 2014). The authors that have investigated impulsivity in eating disorder have found conflicting results.…”

“…Rash impulsivity (RI) and reward-drive (RD) are associated with excess consumption of such products (Gullo, Loxton, & Dawe 2014;Kane, Loxton, Staiger, & Dawe, 2004). This has lead to the suggestion that these traits may play a role in some people's general propensity for excessive and unhealthy consumption (Goodwin, Browne, Rockloff, & Donaldson, 2015a;Kane et al, 2004).…”
