In-Depth Study of Coating Multimodal Porosity Using Ellipsometry Porosimetry in Desorption Scanning Mode

Abstract: Ellipsometry porosimetry provides full adsorption/desorption isotherms and is among the most accurate techniques to probe porosity in thin films. Here we address a novel technique based on desorption scanning for a precise assessment of the porosity features revealing the size distribution of interconnections between the various populations of pores in the coatings. This investigation was performed on model (multimodal) mesoporous silica films prepared by evaporation-induced self-assembly in the presence of mi… Show more

“…This means that the pore fractions, pore sizes, and pore inter-connections are different in the two alteration layers. 61,62 The pore-size distributions in Fig. 3 reveal that there is a higher population of large pores (>2 nm) in the pH 7, 2046-day-corroded layer in comparison to that in the pH 9, 2046-day-corroded layer.…”

“…Recently, the desorption scanning mode has been adapted to EP to measure internal pore connectivity that cannot be assessed by another way. [110] This method can be used to investigate how meso-or larger pores can be connected by micropores inside the film.…”

“… [12d] The asymmetry of the pore size analysis may indicate a typical pore blocking effect of bottleneck pores, which also correlates well with the pore radius of the desorption branch, which is associated with the corresponding interconnection size. [ 17 ]…”
