Abstract: Versican is increased with inflammation and fibrosis, and is upregulated in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. In fibrotic diaphragm muscles from dystrophic mdx mice, genetic reduction of versican attenuated macrophage infiltration and improved contractile function. Versican is also implicated in myogenesis.
