In-line estimation of sulfur and nitrogen contents during hydrotreating of middle distillates

Abstract: -The main objective of this work is analyzing whether it is possible to develop an empirical correlation for in-line estimation of the sulfur and nitrogen contents of the middle distillates Hydrotreating (HDT) products for control purposes. Correlations are based only on readily available in-line information of specific gravity variation between feedstock and products, without considering any piece of information about the kinetic behavior of the catalyst. Experimental data were obtained in pilot plants under … Show more

“…In all cases, the obtained sulfur, nitrogen, and total aromatics contents were similar to the initial values, confirming the initial assumption, as reported elsewhere. 32 (As a consequence, it was shown that the in-line monitoring of specific gravity can be used to provide real-time inferences about the nitrogen, sulfur, and aromatics contents of hydrotreated products. )…”

“…This treatment is effective and low cost. [4][5][6] H 2 S and other sulfur compounds lead to corrosion of concrete and metallic structures (due to their acidity), which poses difficulties in oil storage, use and handling. 4 These substances also have a negative impacts on wastewater treatment.…”

“…4 These substances also have a negative impacts on wastewater treatment. 4,7,8 Their toxicity and malodorous properties deteriorate finished products, 4,5 and must be treated for environmental protection. 6,9,10 Once most NaOH has reacted with sulfur compounds, the solution is known as spent sulfidic caustic (SSC).…”

“…These data allow calculation of properties like specific gravity and vapor pressure of such streams. In liquid streams, specific gravity data have been used to establish an empirical correlation for in-line estimation of their sulfur content (Pacheco et al, 2009). The on-line analyzer based on ultraviolet fluorescence (UVF) is an analytical technique conceived to determine total sulfur in gaseous streams (Blomberg et al, 2004;Pacheco et al, 2009).…”
