In pursuit of an environmentally friendly convention industry

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to systematically develop a sustainability framework and guidelines for the green convention industry to cover the entire process of hosting a convention. Design/methodology/approach The guidelines were designed in three phases: defining a sustainability framework for a green convention, conducting a three-round Delphi survey and developing comprehensive guidelines. The relative weights and/or importance were calculated and compared based on questionnaires and the analytic hierarchy p… Show more

“…By creating or developing the sustainable guidelines of the convention center, practitioners can prioritize the necessary practices and execute the convention events in more responsible ways [30]. According to Lee's research, both physical environmental factors and event management factors of the eco-friendly convention have been found to determine participants' satisfaction in common with both conference and exhibition participants [7].…”

“…Contrary to traditional MEC studies that have used individual interviews and a soft laddering approach to gain qualitative insights about the subject matter (Ronda et al, 2020), this study opted for hard laddering. It used the Classical Delphi technique that is applauded for its distinct way to ensure the anonymity of responses, iteration, and controlled feedback, utilising technology to gain access to so‐called experts more easily across a larger geographic area in a shorter period (Paraskevas & Saunders, 2012; Park & Kim, 2017; Pfleegor et al, 2019). This was ideal during the COVID‐19 period when restrictions were posed on movement and contact among people.…”

“…This was ideal during the COVID‐19 period when restrictions were posed on movement and contact among people. A Classical Delphi process specifically involves experts about a topic (Millennials with experience in clothing purchases, in this study) to reach a consensus about a topic of investigation (brand legitimacy) (Okoli & Pawlowski, 2004; Park & Kim, 2017; Sobaih et al, 2012; van Looy et al, 2017). It has been used very successfully in prior studies to analyse complex situations (Luo et al, 2018; Meijering & Tobi, 2018), and to explore imperfect knowledge with no correct answer where future scenarios, experiences and behaviour depend less on the past, relying more on the concerns and authority of individuals (Nyström & Kaartemo, 2022), which fit the circumstances of the global COVID‐19 crisis.…”

“…While the ideal number of panel members has not been specified in the literature, a study in 1997 (Ludwig) noted the majority of published Delphi studies consisted of 15 to 20 members, but noted smaller panels can be adequate if the panel members' backgrounds are similar. Prior literature also notes that there is no minimum or ideal number of Delphi panel members, but having a homogenous group of expert panel members is needed for fewer panel members in a Delphi study (Hsu & Sandford, 2007;Park & Kim, 2017;Skulmoski, Hartman, Krahn, & Er, 2007). Yousuf noted, "The outcome of a Delphi sequence is nothing but opinion.…”
