In search of brominated activated carbon fibers for elemental mercury removal from power plant effluents

Abstract: Three methods have been developed to incorporate bromine containing groups into activated carbon fibers (ACFs) involving the use of bromine vapor, KBr impregnation and electrochemical methods using KBr solution. Both static and dynamic tests were carried out to measure the elemental mercury adsorption performances of these brominated samples. XPS and BET tests of these brominated ACFs have also been conducted. For our brominated samples, bromine atoms were incorporated into the carbon matrix which increased Hg… Show more

“…Indeed, GEM removal is enhanced if the aerosol was impregnated (i.e. pre-treated) with halogens, [96][97][98][99] or sulfur. 100 Sulfur impregnation greatly increases the abundancy of sulte and sulfates (especially sulfuric acid) on particle surfaces and within pores, compounds that likely act as Hg adsorption sites to generate HgSO 4 , 92,94,[100][101][102][103] which is very stable at ambient temperatures.…”

“…Surface functionalization of ACFs is often realized through the addition of oxygen functional groups such as phenolic, carboxylic or lactonic groups or through nitridation to add amines, amides or pyridines groups. Several methods have been developed, such as chemical oxidation [260][261][262][263], nitridation [264,265], plasma treatment (oxygen [266,267] or nitrogen [268]), halogenation [269,270], gamma-ray irradiation [271] or electrochemical oxidation [272,273]. Whereas wall decoration is well adapted for enhancing gas sorption (CO 2 , SO 2 ) [260,268], the decomposition of trapped species needs the presence of an embedded active material such as metal oxide nanoparticles within the framework [175,274].…”
