In search of Pollentia's southern harbour: Geoarchaeological evidence from the Bay of Alcúdia (Mallorca, Spain)

Abstract: The Roman city of Pollentia was founded on the northeastern coast of Mallorca (Balearic archipelago) after the Roman conquest of the island in 123 BC. There is evidence that the city had two harbours, a small harbour located to the north, whereas the main harbour was located to the south of Pollentia. Our study focuses on the southern harbour, on a coastal plain in proximity to the ancient city. Four sedimentary cores were taken and bio-sedimentological analysis were performed. Here, we describe the palaeogeog… Show more

“…Deltas are land-sea interfaces. We have identified two pressures linked to high-energy Meteo-marine dynamics and high-energy events are well documented on clastic coastlines (Marriner et al, 2017). In the Northern Adriatic Sea, Kaniewski et al (2016) Vacchi et al, 2016Vacchi et al, , 2018.…”

“…This approach has been widely adopted in Mediterranean coastal studies (e.g. Kraft et al, 2007;Goodman et al, 2008Goodman et al, , 2009Kayan, 2014;Marriner et al, 2014;Delile et al, 2015;Morhange et al, 2016;Evelpidou et al, 2017;Flaux et al, 2017;Giaime et al, 2017;Pennington et al, 2017;Seeliger et al, 2018) to investigate lateral and vertical changes in the sediment stratigraphy and to probe the evolution of the landscape, notably shoreline migration.…”

“…This was mainly due to the very limited amount of RSL data in the area. However, recent investigations performed in Mallorca and Menorca (Burjachs et al, 2017, Giaime et al, 2017 coupled with the sparse older data (Fornós et al, 1998, Yll et al, 1999 allowed us to comprehensively reassess the RSL history of this insular complex. Vacchi et al (2016) underlined the poor quality of the RSL reconstruction for the Gulf of Valencia (region 3, figure 1).…”
