In Sickness and in Health: The Oxygen Reactive Species and the Bone

Abstract: Oxidative stress plays a central role in physiological and pathological bone conditions. Its role in signalment and control of bone cell population differentiation, activity, and fate is increasingly recognized. The possibilities of its use and manipulation with therapeutic goals are virtually unending. However, how redox balance interplays with the response to mechanical stimuli is yet to be fully understood. The present work summarizes current knowledge on these aspects, in an integrative and broad introduct… Show more

“…Overall, our data indicate that Dpp3 preserves bone health, which sounds reasonable based on evidence of reduced Nrf2 and HO-1 expression and increased lipid peroxidation in the bone tissue lacking Dpp3 and on the well-known detrimental effect of sustained inflammation and oxidative stress on bone homeostasis [17].…”

“…Oxidative stress has been linked to many bone-related diseases in humans and mammals ( Reis and Ramos, 2021 ). In broilers, at least 30% of birds showed poor locomotion during the fast growth period ( Wideman, 2016 ; Zhang et al, 2020 ), which interfered chicken’ accessibility to feed and water, predominantly reducing the growth and causing an economic loss in production.…”
