In-Situ Environmental Gamma Radiation Monitoring at Ramna Thana, Dhaka, Bangladesh

Abstract: Environmental gamma radiation dose rates were measured using a digital portable Gamma-Scout detector from April-May 2018. For this, total 22 monitoring points (MP) were selected in the outdoor environment in the area of Ramna Thana under Dhaka city. The MPs were marked-out using Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation. The GPS reading of the sampling locations were varied from E: 90o23.568' to E: 90o24.895' and from N: 23o44.031' to N: 23o45.018'. The measured dose rates due to natural radionuclides were ra… Show more

“…2 that the highest frequency lies between 136 and 150 nSv/h absorbed dose rate region caused by mean background radiation. From the previous study, the background radiation due to natural radionuclides of Motijheel & Ramna thana, the heart of Dhaka city, ranged from 0.095 to 0.185 μSv/h (mean: 0.147 ± 0.047 μSv/h) & from 0.115 to 0.186 μSv/h (mean: 0.145 ± 0.044 μSv/h) [ 38 , 39 ]. The mean dose rate around the hospital's environment is shown in Fig.…”

“…On the other hand, the lower value of the RTOEGR dose rate in the Nilkhet (1) MP is due to the lack of construction materials of the buildings. The mean RTOEGR dose rate of the New Market Thana is lower than Ramna Thana in Dhaka city [29] and Shahbag Thana in Dhaka city [30]. The lower value of the mean RTOEGR dose rate of the New Market Thana compared to that of the other two Thanas in Dhaka city might be due to the lack of large hospitals and radiological facilities where radioactive substances are handling.…”

“…The majority of human exposure to ionizing radiation occurs from natural sources including cosmic rays and terrestrial radiation [8]. As discussed in previous sections that 5G technology is centered on high frequency spectrum i.e., millimeter wave spectrum, it is necessary to analyze the behavior of the same over human body.…”
