In Situ Hybrid Aluminum Matrix Composites: A Review of Phase Transformations and Mechanical Aspects

Abstract: The growing industrial needs for the development of strong load‐bearing materials by powder metallurgy and casting technologies has led to recent progress in the synthesis of in situ hybrid aluminium matrix composites (AMCs). Unlike their conventional counterparts, this class of engineering materials and their physicomechanical properties are sparsely investigated with no satisfactorily systematic approach and are not reviewed up to now. This is why providing an overview summarizing the formation mechanisms of… Show more

“…Reinforcements such as Al 2 O 3 , SiC, and TiC are common in particulate-reinforced AMCs and other MMCs. [7][8][9][10] Due to the micrometer size of the reinforcements in such composites, the machinability becomes a challenging task. [11] After the discovery of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by Iijima, a revolution started in the field of carbon due to its excellent chemical stability and mechanical properties.…”

“…To further reduce the weight of structural components via enhancing the strength of Al and its alloys, several reinforcements have been added to produce Al matrix composites (AMCs). Reinforcements such as Al 2 O 3 , SiC, and TiC are common in particulate‐reinforced AMCs and other MMCs . Due to the micrometer size of the reinforcements in such composites, the machinability becomes a challenging task .…”

“…Further, the sintering mechanism and heating environment play a vibrant role in determination of the overall material property. 14,46,47 The ratio of the nano-hardness ( H ) and reduced young’s modulus ( E r ) is summarized in Table 1. From the table it can be clearly seen that the addition of ZnO in the Al improves the work hardening behavior ( H / E r ) value.…”
