In situ lithium and boron isotope determinations in mica, pyroxene, and serpentine by LA-MC-ICP-MS

Abstract: Boron and Li are light, incompatible elements that preferentially partition into the liquid phase, whether melt or aqueous fluid, and thus are useful for tracking fluid-related processes in rocks. Most of the Li isotopic data presently available on subduction-related rocks are from whole-rock analyses; and the B isotopic analyses of subduction material have been carried out either on whole-rocks or in-situ on an accessory phase, such as tourmaline. The new method presented here couples an ESI New Wave UP-193-FX… Show more

“…Boron isotopes were measured in situ by LA-MC-ICP-MS using an ESI New Wave UP-193-FX ArF* (193 nm) excimer laser coupled to a Neptune Plus (ThermoScientific) MC-ICP-MS (Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University) for B concentrations above 5 ppm (Martin et al, 2015).…”

“…The standards used to monitor the B isotopes measurements by LA-MC-ICP-MS are NIST SRM 610 and NIST SRM 612. They yield δ 11 B of -0.3 ± 2.8 ‰ (n = 100) and of +0.7 ± 3.3 ‰ (n = 262) respectively, using LA-MC-ICP-MS method (Martin et al, 2015). The standards used to monitor The B isotopes measurements by SIMS are GOR132-G and B6.…”

“…The following reference standards were used (Table 1): glasses GOR128-G komatiite and StHs6/80-G dacite (Rosner and Meixner 2004), phengite 80-3 (Pabst et al 2012), and micas MVE02-8-5 and JJE01-X-3 (Martin et al 2015). A small offset in δ 11 B of − 1.2% for phengite 80-3 was observed compared to the glasses, in agreement with offset of micas relative to anhydrous glasses reported by Pabst et al (2012) and De Hoog et al (2017).…”

“…So far, geochemical estimation of traceelement property of fluids from jadeitite are based on experimental data of diopsidic clinopyroxene instead of jadeitic pyroxene. A large amount of data via quick and precise in-situ analytical techniques (e.g., Martin et al, 2015;Kimura et al, 2016) and new experimental data will allow to a statistical-mechanical study to decipher fluid evolution in subduction zone system.…”
