In-situ monitoring of an organic sample with electric field determination during cold plasma jet exposure

Abstract: Pockels-based Mueller polarimetry is presented as a novel diagnostic technique for studying time and space-resolved and in-situ the interaction between an organic sample (a layer of onion cells) and non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma. The effect of plasma is complex, as it delivers electric field, radicals, (UV) radiation, non-uniform in time nor in space. This work shows for the first time that the plasma-surface interaction can be characterized through the induced electric field in an electrooptic cryst… Show more

“…The quantification of surface charging by the IWs generated by the plasma jet is done using an advanced novel diagnostic called Mueller polarimetry. A similar setup has been used in previous works 33 , 48 50 but the experimental procedure taken in this work, shown in Fig. 6 , followed the configuration proposed in 34 , 35 .…”

“…The latter was of most importance since it relates directly to the imposed electric field inside the sample due to surface charges as a result of the plasma–surface interaction. Depolarization can be an interesting tool as well since it allows to look at the surface changes a material undergoes during plasma exposure 36 . Example images of the Mueller matrices and logarithmic decomposed matrices can be found in Ref.…”

“…Another important reason for the stronger anti-tumor effect of direct CAP treatment could be physical. Next to RONS production, CAP also generates thermal-and ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which also have a strong impact on tumor cell behavior [54][55][56], and which are not available in the case of indirect treatment with PTS.…”
