In-situ observations of aerosol particles remaining from evaporated cirrus crystals: Comparing clean and polluted air masses

Abstract: Abstract. In-situ observations of aerosol particles contained in cirrus crystals are presented and compared to interstitial aerosol size distributions (non-activated particles in between the cirrus crystals). The observations were conducted in cirrus clouds in the Southern and Northern Hemisphere mid-latitudes during the INCA project. The first campaign in March and April 2000 was performed from Punta Arenas, Chile (54°S) in pristine air. The second campaign in September and October 2000 was performed from Pre… Show more

“…Heterogeneous nucleation of ice is regarded as a possible formation mechanism of cirrus ice clouds [ Heymsfield et al , 1998; DeMott et al , 1998; Seifert et al , 2003; Ström et al , 2003; Haag et al , 2003]. It has been shown that mineral dust particles have a significant impact on cloud formation, cloud properties, and precipitation [ Levin et al , 1996; Rosenfeld et al , 2001; Yin et al , 2002; DeMott et al , 2003; Sassen et al , 2003; Toon , 2003; Mahowald and Kiehl , 2003; Sassen , 2005].…”

“…While it is impossible to directly observe ice nucleation in situ (Hegg and Baker, 2009), heterogeneous ice nucleation is regarded as a possible formation mechanism for cirrus DeMott et al, 1998;Seifert et al, 2003;Haag et al, 2003) and mixed-phase clouds (Rogers et al, 2001b;DeMott et al, 2003;Verlinde et al, 2007).…”

“…In the last decade much attention has been given to laboratory studies on heterogeneous ice nucleation (e.g., Hoose and Möhler, 2012, and references therein) and to field studies (e.g., DeMott et al, 2003a, b;Prenni et al, 2009a, b;Klein et al, 2010a;Santachiara et al, 2010;Ardon-Dryer et al, 2011;Conen et al, 2012), all of which contributed greatly to our understanding of IN distribution in different parts of the world. In addition, analysis of the chemical composition of IN residuals from airborne measurements using electron microscopy and mass spectroscopy (e.g., Seifert et al, 2003;Cziczo et al, 2003Cziczo et al, , 2006Cziczo et al, , 2013Froyd et al, 2010) have added a deeper understanding about the nature of some of the IN in the atmosphere.…”
