In-situ Polymerization of Styrene to Produce Polystyrene / Montmorillonite Nanocomposites

Abstract: A reactive cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was synthesized for intercalation of montmorillonite Mmt, a Maghnite type of clay. The pristine montmorillonite (Mmt) was obtained from Algerian plant with a cation exchange, Organophilic Mmt, was prepared by ion exchange between Na + ions in the clay. CTAB-intercalated Mmt particles were easily dispersed and swollen in styrene monomer, PS/Mmt-CTAB nanocomposites were synthesized via in-situ polymerization, in-situ polymerization, this method… Show more

“…Another article about in-situ polymerization of styrene to produce polystyrene/montmorillonite nanocomposites was reported by Mrah et al [4]. In this study, it was found that a reactive cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was synthesized for intercalation of montmorillonite Mmt, a Maghnite type of clay.…”

“…A mass of raw Maghnite (10 g) was placed in a volume of distilled water (40 ml), this mixture was left in suspension under magnetic stirring and at temperature ambient for 2 h. After 2 h, a volume (60 ml) of sodium chloride solution (NaCl, 0.2 M) was added to the previous mixture and stirred for 48 h. After this time, the Maghnite-Na + was filtered and washed several times with distilled water in order to remove Cl-ions. After filtration, the Maghnite-Na + was dried in the oven for 24 h at a temperature of 105 °C, afterwards it is finely ground and stored in a dry place [22,23].…”

“…This MMT is called maghnite-CTA throughout this study. [20][21][22] Preparation of PPO/clay nanocomposites. Different PO-clay nanocomposites have been prepared using different amounts of modified clays corresponding to 1%, 5% and 10% by weight based on the initial amount of PO, and PO without clay has also been prepared under the same conditions as the standard.…”
