In Situ Preparation and Corrosion Resistance of a ZrO2 Film on a ZrB2 Ceramic

Abstract: ZrO2 films were in situ prepared using the anodic passivation of a ZrB2 ceramic in alkaline solutions. The composition and structure of the films were characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The corrosion resistances were evaluated in 0.1 M oxalate solution using the potentiodynamic polarization method (PDP) and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique. The results show that ZrO2 films can be pre… Show more

“…The former becomes relatively sharper, while the latter is weaker and broad. The broad signal for Zr3d is indicative of a non-stoichiometric O/Zr ratio; 61 , 62 , 63 or in other words the zirconium adopts mixed valence balanced by a mixture of O 2− and OH − species in this system. This suggests the zirconium species is catalytically active.…”

“…Peak fitting reveals that the Hf 4f 7/2 is centered at 17.2 eV, and is normally attributed with Hf in the +4 oxidation state ( Barreca et al., 2007 ). The Zr 3p spectrum contains two peaks with binding energies around 333 and 346 eV, characteristic of Zr +4 species ( Huang et al., 2001 ; Yang et al., 2019 ). For the Sn 3d spectrum, four peaks were identified resulting from pairs of spin-orbit doublets.…”
