In Situ Simulation

Abstract: Introduction Working under extreme stress can cause medical professionals to deviate from clinical guidelines even if they know of their existence, let alone in situations such as COVID-19 where guidelines are unclear, fluid, and resources limited. In situ simulation has been proven an effective tool for training medical professionals during previous healthcare crises, eg, Ebola, influenza, as well as for assessing the preparedness of centers by identifying potential latent safety threats. In this … Show more

“…Participants agreed with 8 (7-10) that what they learned during the simulation session changed their clinical practice, including for non-suspect patients. Regarding their stress in relation to the care of patients with COVID-19, the participants moderately agreed that the putting on and removing PPE simulation session reduced their stress with a median of 7 (5)(6)(7)(8)(9). The feeling is similar for the intubation and extubation session with a median of 7 (6)(7)(8)(9).…”

“…Participants strongly agree that the simulation had an advantage compared with a written document with a score of 10 (8-10). They also believe that the simulation was more useful than a video with a score of 8 (7)(8)(9)(10).…”

“…As technology and educational methods continue to evolve, clinical simulation is no longer confined to simulation centers [11]; it is being integrated into hospitals and clinics during specific processes and situations, becoming 'in situ' and thus expanding its scope and relevance [12,13]. In the context of sepsis, this approach becomes 2 of 13 even more important as it allows for the identification of problems in the workplace and the implementation of real changes [14][15][16][17]. Clinical simulation is a toolbox that ranges from simple exercises to very complex simulations, creating scenarios that aim to hone not only individual skills, but also communication and teamwork skills, with a common goal centered around preparing healthcare professionals for the real world [18,19].…”
