In-situ Spot Test Measurements and Icmvs for Asphalt Pavement: Lack of Correlations and the Effect of Underlying Support

Abstract: The main aim of this paper is to analyse the performance of different intelligent compaction measurement values (ICMVs) and compare them with spot test measurements for asphalt pavement. To accomplish this, a two-layer asphalt testbed was constructed using an instrumented double-drum roller. All ICMVs [compaction meter value ( ), compaction control value ( ), roller-integrated stiffness ( ), and vibratory modulus ( )] were calculated using the same accelerometer data collected during the construction of the as… Show more

“…After a few trial and error iterations, we created a working prototype that can capture 21 parameters, including 5 ICMVs that have not been recorded in one platform in the past. The ICA platform has the capability to facilitate correction methods to decouple the effect of underlying support (i.e., the existing layers below the compaction layer) on the ICMVs of the material layer that is being compacted 24 . In addition, the platform is retrofittable and is in modular form, making it easily mountable on any existing vibratory roller.…”
