In vitro activation of human herpesviruses 6 and 7 from latency.

Abstract: Human herpesviruses 6 and 7 (HHV-6 and HHV-7) are prevalent lymphotropic viruses that infect more than 80% of children at infancy or during early childhood.Infection ranges from asymptomatic to severe disease. HHV-6B causes exanthem subitum. The virus can be recovered from peripheral blood mononuclear cells during the acute phase of exanthem subitum, but the host remains latently infected throughout life. In immunocompromised patients undergoing kidney, liver, or bone marrow transplantation latent HH`V-6B is r… Show more

“…The reactivation of HHV-7 is observed before HHV-6 reactivation, which may suggest potential interaction between these viruses. These results are in accordance with those obtained in previous studies conducted in vitro (Katsafanas et al, 1996) and in vivo (Maeda et al, 2000;Boutolleau et al, 2003;Hall et al, 2006). However, Sassenscheidt et al (2006), Humar et al (2009), Tormo et al (2010 did not find evidence for potential interaction between HHV-6, HHV-7, and CMV.…”

“…The virus can be recovered from T lymphocytes (1-3) and macrophages (14) and therefore is thought to remain in latent state in these cells. It can be induced in virologically negative lymphocyte cultures by infection with HHV-7 (15). Less is known about the association of HHV-7 infection with human diseases, despite the fact that the sequence of the entire genome has been reported recently (16).…”

“…However, latent HHV6 could be recovered when coinfection with HHV7 was established, suggesting HHV7 can provide a transacting function allowing the reactivation of latent HHV6 (Tanaka-Taya et al, 2000;Katsafanas et al, 1996). We have also shown in normal children that reactivation of one virus may occur with primary infection of the other as demonstrated by concurrent isolation of HHV6 and HHV7 from the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of the children.…”
