In vitro and ex vivo scolicidal effects of Olea europaea L. to inactivate the protoscolecs during hydatid cyst surgery

Abstract: Background Nowadays, surgery is considered as one of the most important treatments for hydatidosis. Due to laceration, the cyst and spread of the content within it (protoscoleces) during the surgery that can put the patient at the risk of re-infection, anaphylaxis shock and even death, surgeons use some chemical drugs as protoscolicidal agents. The study is aimed to evaluate the scolicidal effects of olive ( Olea europaea L.) leaf extract on hydatid cyst protoscoleces … Show more

“…After 10 min of incubation, the protoscoleces were smeared on a glass slide, covered with a coverslip, and tested under a light microscope. The results were reported in the percentage of dead and live protoscoleces with the counting of 300 protoscoleces [ 14 ].…”

“…From ancient times, medicinal herbs and their derivatives have been broadly used for health promotion and therapy for chronic, as opposed to life-threatening, diseases [ 10 , 11 ]. Herbal medicines have also been successfully used in the treatment of a wide range of bacterial, viral, fungal, as well as parasitic infections [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ]. Myrtus communis L. ( M. communis ), which also called myrtle ( Myrtaceae family) is a medicinal herb that has been broadly applied for folk medicine around the world [ 17 ].…”

“…Currently, the therapeutic procedures for CE are quite limited. The existing approaches for the treatment of human CE include chemotherapy, surgery, and PAIR, the last consisting of puncture, aspiration, injection, and re-aspiration [2,4]. At present, several drugs, including the azoles derivatives, albendazole and mebendazole, are used in CE treatment [5].…”

“…During surgery, avoiding spillage of the cyst contents (protoscoleces) is essential to exclude the risk of immunological reactions, re-infection, and even death. Therefore, the utilization of scolicidal agents is critical to reduce the reappearance rate [2,4]. To date, natural medicines have been used for the treatment of several diseases, due to their relative harmlessness and good efficacy.…”
