In vitro and in vivo Areca catechu crude aqueous extract as an anthelmintic against Ascaridia galli infection in chickens

Abstract: Aim: Intestinal parasites cause severe diseases at poultry farms, especially in developing countries, including Indonesia. Infections cause significant decreases in productivity at poultry farms. Ascaridia galli is a common nematode found in chickens with a prevalence of up to 92%. This study evaluates the in vitro and in vivo effects of Areca catechu crude aqueous extract (AAE) as an anthelmintic against A. galli. Materials and Methods: In the in vitro study, already-infected slaughtered chickens were collect… Show more

“…Garlic ( Allium sativum L. ) also showed anthelmintic activity ( Landman, 2005 ). Aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Areca catechu reduced parasitic infestation by Ascaridia galli in poultry ( Mubarokah et al, 2019 ). The latex from papaya fruits and sap also showed anthelmintic activity in chickens against Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinae infections ( Bilandz et al, 2018 ).…”

“…While phenol causes fatigue and death, alkaloids increase gastrointestinal activities that encourage peristaltic movement to expel the worms from the digestive tracts. According to Mubarokah et al (2018), alkaloids as the anthelmintic agent inhibit the transportation across the cell membrane. Generally, anthelmintic activities from the alkaloids extract occur by distracting the performance of membrane cells which eventually changes the cell composition.…”
