In Vitro Antifungal Activity of Satureja horvatii ssp. macrophylla Against 3 Tomato Phytopathogenic Fungi

Abstract: The essential oil from the aerial part of Satureja horvatii spp. macrophylla, an endemic plant species of northwest Greece has been analyzed using GC-MS. Thirty-nine compounds were identified, among which carvacrol was the major constituent (46.8%). The antifungal effect of the essential oil was investigated in vitro against 3 phytopathogenic fungi of tomato, using fumigant and contact assays. Fumigant assay was more effective than contact assay against all phytopathogens. The essential oil inhibited completel… Show more

“…The essential oils, isolated from the aromatic plants, were analyzed by a gas chromatograph (GC) coupled with a mass spectrometer (MS) (GC-2030, GCMS-QPSERIES, Shimadzu, Kyoto, Japan). The essential oil constituents were separated using a Mega 5-MS capillary column (30 m × 0.25 mm × 0.25 μm), helium as carrier gas with a flow rate of 0.9 mL min −1 and a temperature program, previously described [ 36 ]. For the analysis, 1 μL of the essential oil was diluted in n-hexane (1:200) and then injected by autosampler (AOC-20i/s Shimadzu), while the injector was set at split mode (split ratio: 30).…”

“…This Ascomycota causes signi cant economic losses pre-and post-harvest when climatic conditions are favorable (i.e., low temperatures and humid conditions) (Bahammou et al, 2017). The symptoms of gray mold disease include velvety, gray-brown mold on stems and leaves and soft rot with whitish "ghost spots" (small 3-8 mm rings) on the fruit surface that lead to serious damage during all development stages through storage and result in regrettable losses in total yields (Yfanti et al, 2021). Moreover, the disease is responsible for approximately $10-100 million in economic losses in tomato production worldwide annually, decreasing yields by as much as 60% ( Several control approaches based on the integration of various management strategies for this airborne fungus have been documented, including efforts to prevent appressorium formation and inhibit spore germination (Bahammou et al, 2017;Li and Zou, 2017).…”
