In vitro antifungal effect of potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate on the growth of fungi causing sinusitis

Abstract: The study involved 70 nasal swab collected from people suffering from sinusitis and consulted the Ear, Nose and Throat Unit in Al-Diwaniya Teaching Hospital, Iraq during the period from 12 June to 12 August 2016 with ages ranging from 0-65 years old. The results showed that the number of nasal swabs that gave fungal growth was 36/70 (51.428%); highest percentage of fungal infection was recorded in ages ranging from 11-20 years old 8(80%), followed by above 60 years old 7(70%) and lowest infection was in 51-60 … Show more

“…It was also found that at the concentration of 1,000 mg L -1 , it occurred 95 % inhibition of fungi that cause sinusitis when potassium sorbate was used in vitro. The highest concentration of the present study was 750 mg L -1 and inhibition was much lower when compared with this study, considering, this time, no similarity to the genus of the tested species (ALSUDANI, 2017).…”

“…Thus, this drug can be a good antifungal agent in the Optisol medium for corneal preservation. [12][13][14] There are still no studies evaluating its efficacy and safety in the treatment of fungal ulcers or its supplementation in hypothermic preservation media. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the addition of cycloheximide in Optisol-GS media in decreasing the growth of the main Candida spp.…”
