In vitro Antioxidant Activity, Phytochemical Screening, Cytotoxicity and Total Phenolic Content in Extracts of Caesalpinia pulcherrima (Caesalpiniaceae) Pods

Abstract: Caesalpinia pulcherrima L. Swartz (Caesalpiniaceae) is an ornamental plant also used as a common medicinal plant in India, Taiwan and South-East Asian countries. Majority of the diseases/disorders are mainly linked to oxidative stress due to free radicals. The aims of this study were to screen for phytochemical constituents, evaluate cytotoxicity, in vitro antioxidant activity and estimation of total phenolic content of extracts of pods of Caesalpinia pulcherrima. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence o… Show more

“…It was observed that the crude pod extract of C. pulcherrima contained high amount of total phenol and avonoids (Table 1). The results obtained in this study are in accordance with the ndings of other researchers who have reported high phenolic and avonoid content in the pods of C. pulcherrima [23][24]. The antioxidant property of polyphenolic compounds has been reported [25][26].…”

“…The antioxidant property of polyphenolic compounds has been reported [25][26]. A correlation between antioxidant activity and the phenolic content has been documented [24,27]. Plant extracts with high phenolic content also show high avonoid content [28] as evident in this study.…”

“…Caesalpinia pulcherrima is a legume with pod-like fruit, and its seeds are a good source of polysaccharides such as galactomannan, with several applications in the food industry such as hydrocolloids, as a texturizer and fiber source (Buriti et al, 2014;Chakraborthy & Badujar, 2009;Passos et al, 2016).…”
