In vitro evaluation of anti-proliferative properties of the methanolic extracts of Andrographis echioides Nees on skin melanoma cell lines

Abstract

Cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths and the cases are gradually increasing globally. Several medicines are available in the market but none of them is proved to be safe and effective. Plants and plant derived compounds are known to treat diseases since ancient time. Most of them are proved to cause less or no side effects. Andrographis members particularly Andrographis paniculata is known to be used in the treatment of an array of diseases. Its sister species Andrographis echioides plant parts were known to use in stomach pain, snake bite, scorpion sting and treating cuts. In the previous study we reported significant anti-helminthic activity of Andrographis echioides Nees (AE). In the present study we explored the anti-cancerproperties of the methanolic extracts of AE on A375 and B16F10 cell lines. Methanolic extracts of stem and leaf of Andrographis echioides have shown potent anti-proliferative properties. Further investigations are warranted for in depth mechanism of its anti-cancerous potential.
