In vitro fertilization of the rock shrimp, Rhynchocinetes typus (Decapoda, Caridea): a review

Abstract: This review compiles all the research done on gametes and fertilization in the rock shrimp, R. typus, and describes the sequence of events from the fi rst gamete interaction to zygote formation and the fi rst cleavage of the embryo, with light, fl uorescence confocal and electron microscopes. Early studies showed that sperm from the vas deferens have a tack-shape with a "needle-like process" or rigid spike (RS) that extends from a semi-spherical body that contains the arms with chromatin and spines. Upon conta… Show more

“…Nowadays, it is a consolidated acquisition that the fusion of the gametes represents the result of an ordered series of events whose first fundamental step is represented by the specific recognition between the two cells and their subsequent binding (Hirohashi et al, 2008); in several animal groups such as sea urchin (Dhume and Lennarz, 1995;Glabe et al, 1982;Rossignol and Lennarz, 1983), decapods (Dupr e and Barros, 2011;Dupr e et al, 2012), molluscs (Focarelli et al, 1988(Focarelli et al, , 1990, tunicates (Baginski et al, 1999;De Santis and Pinto, 1990;Honegger and Koyanagi, 2008;Rosati and De Santis, 1980;Rosati, 1985), amphibian (Del Pino and Cabada, 1987;Gualtieri and Andreuccetti, 1996;Maturi et al, 1998) and mammals (Clark, 2013;Jones et al, 1988;Miller and Ax, 1990;Snell and White, 1996;Wassarman and Litscher, 2001;Wassarman, 1987) the study of the interaction between the gametes has highlighted the existence of a common strategy based on high affinity and specificity of recognition and binding between specific glycoconjugates and receptors present on the gamete surfaces. However, it is not known whether in other animal groups the mechanisms of gametes interaction follow the same route or if they are based on alternative strategies.…”
