In Vitro Microbiological and Drug Release of Silver/Ibuprofen Loaded Wound Dressing Designed for the Treatment of Chronically Infected Painful Wounds

Abstract: This study consisted of developing a dressing loaded with silver (Ag) and ibuprofen (IBU) that provides a dual therapy, antibacterial and antalgic, intended for infected painful wounds. Therefore, non-woven polyethyleneterephtalate (PET) textiles nonwovens were pre-treated by cyclodextrin crosslinked with citric acid by a pad/dry/cure process. Then, textiles were impregnated in silver solution followed by a thermal treatment and were then coated by Layer-by-Layer (L-b-L) deposition of a polyelectrolyte multila… Show more

“…For example, Mogrovejo-Valdivia et al, designed a wound dressing loaded with silver and ibuprofen. The biomaterial displayed a sustained release of ibuprofen and antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus [ 23 ]. As well as this, a new dermal device of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) containing AgNPs associated with a collagen–hyaluronic acid membrane has been recently developed to promote skin regeneration, control inflammation, and reduce fungal and bacterial proliferation [ 24 ].…”

“…The obtained CDs-Ag-PEM-IBU dressing released 104 μg·cm −2 (56%) of IBU-L after 30 min. Regarding the antimicrobial properties, PET-CD-Ag-PEM exhibited bacterial reduction against S. aureus and E. coli [ 118 ].…”

“…Additionally, nearly all the drug-release studies were carried out in the batch mode, i.e., with samples fully immersed in the release medium. As such, given that most of these volumes will be much higher than the exudate volume in contact with a WD, the drug release kinetics in vivo may be different and, as recognized by others [170], more relevant models should be employed.…”
