In Vitro Propagation of Sugarcane for Certified Seed Production

Abstract: Micropropagation of sugarcane is important to obtain pathogen-free plants, genetically homogeneous and invigorate. The micropropagation procedure is divided into stages for the sake of better understanding. Micropropagation for large-scale sugarcane production using a temporary immersion system (TIS) is described. In addition, the aim of this chapter is to report, from the laboratory to the field, the best way to establish and use basic seed (primary seed), semicommercial seed (foundation or secondary seed) an… Show more

“…In this regard, meristem tip culture may be used to remove viruses. Consistent with this proposition, Lal et al (2015) and Bello-Bello et al (2018) have stated that micropropagation (meristem tip culture) enables the renewal of aged and deteriorated varieties as well as the sanitation of diseased varieties.…”

“…The plant tissue culture technique allows the establishment, manipulation, and development of cells, tissues, or organs under aseptic conditions [15], while micropropagation is one of the most important global agricultural biotechnology techniques routinely used for the rapid generation of high-quality, uniform, and disease-free plant material [16]. Different in vitro sugarcane micropropagation protocols are available to produce seed canes of high phytosanitary quality (healthy) and with genetic purity (similar to their mother plants) [17].…”

“…The advantages over the traditional techniques are not needing much manpower, large nurseries, logistic storage, transportation, and irrigation [2]. Recently, many commercial plantations have applied micropropagation, especially to produce and propagate their elite sugarcane varieties [3][4][5] Most of the commercially available sugarcanes are complex interspecific hybrids with polyploid genomes, primarily between Saccharum officinarum and Saccharum spontaneum [6]. On one side, polyploidy in sugarcane is considered an advantage for breeding programs as it allows the development of sugarcane varieties with multiple desired traits [7][8][9].…”
