In vitro propagation of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) cultivars

Abstract: The study is aimed at establishing a simple protocol for in vitro regeneration of sweet potato with a view to providing planting materials to farmers as well as basis for genetic improvement. Axillary buds were excised and cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal salts supplemented with 6-benzyl aminopurine (BAP), gibberellic acid (GA 3 ) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) singly or in combination. The shoot height and number of leaves differed significantly among the cultivars. The result also indicated sign… Show more

“…Regeneration of shoots from calli in any of the two media (MS0.8 and LS0.8) tested could not be achieved, especially from the white and compacted calli obtained, indicating a strong varietal response to in vitro treatment. Similar results were noted by other workers where white or brown compact surface calli failed to regenerate shoots [17,18,19].…”

“…This variation, however, might not be unconnected to several factors such as genotype and its interaction with the growth environment, media composition, growth regulators, etc. (Abubakar et al, 2018;Pandey et al, 2003). The least percentage (14.29%) in callus induction was found in IAA (2.0 mg/L) + BAP (0.5 mg/L).…”

“…these horticultural crops are underutilised and neglected vegetables such as sweet potato and taro (Colocasia esculenta) [20] whose micropropagation and germplasm preservation have been successful [21][22][23][24][25]. In this study, the Livingstone potato was also subjected to micropropagation techniques, and the results are discussed here.…”
