In vitro scanning accuracy using different aids for multiple implants in the edentulous arch

Abstract: Intraoral scanners (IOS) have become an essential part of the workflow in digital dentistry and are routinely used for diagnosis and treatment planning as well as for various dental restorative procedures (Abduo & Elseyoufi, 2018;Flügge et al., 2018;Kernen et al., 2021). Intraoral scanning of dental implants using implant scan bodies serves to acquire information of the spatial position of the implant within the oral cavity and its relation to other scan bodies or to adjacent teeth.

“…Values for TR resulted in 165 μm for unsplinted scans and scans with a scan aid. Deviations of scans with the identical scan aid in vitro amounted to 358 μm for unsplinted scans and 291 μm for the scans with the scan aid, respectively (Kernen et al, 2022). This study and the previous in vitro investigation by Kernen et al of the scan aid confirm equal to improved accuracy when using the scan aid compared to unsplinted scans.…”

“…The case–control study included intraoral scanning of implants in the edentulous jaw using two different IOS with and without the universal scan aid (Kernen et al, 2022). The Institutional Review Board approved the study protocol of the Medical Center—University of Freiburg, Freiburg, Germany (No.…”
