In vitro susceptibilities of the Bacteroides fragilis group to 14 antimicrobial agents in Korea

Abstract: The susceptibilities to 14 antimicrobial agents of 172 clinical isolates of the Bacteroides fragilis group from Korean patients during 1989 and 1990 were tested by an agar dilution method. All the isolates tested were susceptible to imipenem, chloramphenicol, and metronidazole. The rate of resistance to cefoxitin was 6%.

“…However, the resistance rates to both of the cephamycins were significantly different depending on the species of bacteria tested. The resistance rates to cefoxitin, the third most active β -lactam in this study, were 4-11% overall for B. fragilis group isolates, and these rates were not significantly higher as compared with previous studies, especially the rates for B. fragilis [9,23].…”

“…In contrast to many studies (4,9,16,17,19,22), B. thetaiotaomicron, B. ovatus, and B. distasonis strains, together, were isolated more frequently (42.7%) than B. fragilis (35.4%). The growing number of species within the B. fragilis group requires attentive examination of their frequency of isolation, as well as the antimicrobial susceptibility of each species.…”

“…Members of the Bacteroides fragilis group are the most frequent and important anaerobic gram-negative human pathogens isolated in intra-abdominal infections (2,10,11,15,16,18,23). Over the past few years, nationwide studies have demonstrated that these microorganisms have undergone changes in their susceptibility patterns (1-3, 5-8, 10, 13, 16, 21), as well as in the prevalence of their species (6,10,18 Resistance rates varied from one medical center to another.…”

“…Aminothiazolyl-methoxyimino cephalosporins generally show potent activity against many anaerobic bacteria, while the members of the B. fragilis group show low levels of susceptibility to these compounds (5,10,13 Although the activities of some cephalosporins, such as ceftizoxime, varied depending on inoculum size and medium pH (6,24), the activity of FK037 was not influenced by inoculum size or medium pH, except with a few strains.…”
