“…The Cho resonance contains contributions from phosphocholine and glycerophosphorylcholine; available evidence suggests that glycerophosphorylcholine, which comprises at least half of the MR-visible peak (Miller et al, 1996), is a cerebral osmolyte (Lien et al, 1990;Videen et al, 1995). Chronic renal failure, for example, associated with a prolonged hyerposmotic state, demonstrates a positive correlation between MRS-derived Cho and serum osmotic pressure (Sasaki et al, 2006).…”

“…Furthermore, the choline resonance has been correlated with cell density and with indices of cellular proliferation (Miller et al, 1996). The detected decrease in choline could be a consequence of the therapeutic effect of temozolomide and subsequent neoplastic cell death.…”

“…By providing in vivo estimates of Ch concentration, MR spectroscopy is thought to provide information on membrane turnover (Gadian, 1995), the degree of myelination (Hida et al, 1992), and cell density (Miller et al, 1996). The Ch concentration is reported to vary with the production and degradation of the Ch-containing phospholipids, which are abundant in cell membrane and in myelin (Miller et al, 1996;Alberts et al, 2002;Styor, 1988). An abnormality in membrane structure or myelination could precipitate decreased synaptic strength and efficiency, manifesting in cognitive deficits.…”
