In vivo analysis of the vascular pattern of the superficial temporal artery based on digital subtraction angiography

Abstract: The common variations of the branching pattern of the STA are described in this study. Furthermore, surgically relevant inner diameters and lengths of the main branches of the STA are determined. These findings should improve our understanding of the suitability and usefulness of the STA for various surgical procedures.

“…From the 38 bilateral examinations, only 10 cases (26 %) demonstrated an identical type and subtype of the STA pattern according to the anatomic variations described by Medved et al [15]. Six of them demonstrated a bilateral type A, two of them a bilateral type C1, another one a bilateral type C3 and one case a bilateral type E1 pattern.…”

“…Measurements of the inner diameters of the following segments were performed and denoted with the lowercase letters in brackets as described in Medved et al [15]: the main trunk directly after its origin (o), the STA bifurcation directly (b), the frontal (f) and parietal (p) branches directly after the bifurcation. Measurements of the following absolute vessel lengths were performed and denoted with the capital letters in brackets as described in Medved et al [15]: between the origin of the STA from the external carotid artery and the main bifurcation (C), between the main bifurcation and the level, where the inner diameters of the frontal and/or parietal branches reach 1 mm (F and/ or P).…”
