In Vivo and In Vitro Anti-Bacterial Efficacy of Absorbable Barbed Polydioxanone Monofilament Tissue Control Device with Triclosan

Abstract: The STRATAFIX Symmetric PDS Plus Knotless Tissue Control Device demonstrated in vitro anti-bacterial activity against all test organisms. This activity was maintained for 11 and 23 days when tested against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. The device was not colonized by test bacteria in vitro. The anti-bacterial activity remained stable for as long as 36 months of storage at 30°C and 75% relative humidity. In vivo evaluation in animal models demonstrated a 1.16-log reduction in S. aureus and a 1.83-log red… Show more

“…The activity against S. aureus and E. coli persisted for up to 3 weeks. 61 The authors also concluded that the SADBS, apart from the inherent benefits of barbed sutures, was also a valuable adjunct in reducing the risk of SSIs. 61 Theoretically, the overall operative time of SADBS group was expected to be shorter.…”

“…61 The authors also concluded that the SADBS, apart from the inherent benefits of barbed sutures, was also a valuable adjunct in reducing the risk of SSIs. 61 Theoretically, the overall operative time of SADBS group was expected to be shorter. However, the results were similar, which could be attributed to the 5-min differences in wound closure time between the two groups, which was further diluted by an operative time >90 min.…”

“…In pre-clinical studies, STRATAFIX TM Symmetric PDS TM Plus Knotless Tissue Control Device, provided good tissue-edge approximation under tension [13] and demonstrated good efficacy against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria [14]. Due to its self-locking, multi-anchor design, knotting is not necessary.…”

“…Therefore bared suture have been utilized in a various surgical procedures, including gastric bypass surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and arthroplasty [ 12 ]. However, only few studies have investigated the effectiveness of barbed sutures in spine surgeries [ 13 - 15 ].…”
