BackgroundThe vast majority of the population around the world has always used medicinal plants as first source of health care to fight infectious and non infectious diseases. Most of these medicinal plants may have scientific evidence to be considered in general practice.ObjectiveThe aim of this work was to investigate the antioxidant capacities and anti-inflammatory activities of ethanol extracts of leaves of Cassia alata, Eleusine indica, Carica papaya, Eremomastax speciosa and the stem bark of Polyscias fulva, collected in Cameroon.MethodsChemiluminescence was used to analyze the antioxidant activities of plant extracts against hydrogen peroxide or superoxide anion. Comet assays were used to analyze the protection against antioxidant-induced DNA damage induced in white blood cells after treating with hydrogen peroxide. Flow cytometry was used to measure γδ T cells proliferation and anti-inflammatory activity of γδ T cells and of immature dendritic cells (imDC) in the presence of different concentrations of plant extracts.ResultsEthanol extracts showed strong antioxidant properties against both hydrogen peroxide and superoxide anion. Cassia alata showed the highest antioxidant activity. The effect of plant extracts on γδ T cells and imDC was evidenced by the dose dependent reduction in TNF-α production in the presence of Cassia alata, Carica papaya, Eremomastax speciosa Eleusine indica, and Polyscias fulva. γδ T cells proliferation was affected to the greatest extent by Polyscias fulva.ConclusionThese results clearly show the antioxidant capacity and anti-inflammatory activities of plant extracts collected in Cameroon. These properties of leaves and stem bark extracts may contribute to the value for these plants in traditional medicine and in general medical practice.

Ethno-veterinary uses of Poaceae in Punjab, Pakistan

Plant species of the Poaceae family are not only used as fodder and forage but also contribute substantially to the treatment of various health disorders, particularly in livestock. Consequently, the present study was aimed to document the therapeutic uses of Poaceae practiced by the inhabitants of the Punjab Province for the treatment of various veterinary health disorders. Semi structured interviews, group discussion and field walks were conducted to collect the data. Quantitative indices including cultural significance index (CSI), relative frequency of citations (RFC), fidelity level (FL), relative popularity level (RPL), and Jaccard Index (JI) were used for the data analysis. Traditional uses of 149 species belonging to 60 genera and 16 tribes of 5 sub families of Poaceae were recorded. Whole plants and leaves were the most consistently used parts with 40.94 and 29.53%. The plants were mainly given orally as fodder (59 reports) without processing followed by decoction (35 reports). Most of the species were employed to treat infectious diseases (25.93%), and digestive disorders (14.10%). Triticum aestivum had the highest CSI, RFC and RPL levels at 8.00, 0.96, 1.00, respectively, followed by Oryza sativa and Poa annua. Likewise, T. aestivum and Saccharum spontaneum had 100% FL and ROP. Jaccard index ranged from 12.25 to 0.37. Twelve plant species namely Chrysopogon zizanioides (anti-inflammatory), Pennisetum lanatum (improve bull fertility), Cymbopogon citratus (glandular secretion), Sorghum saccharatum and Themeda triandra (malaria), Aristida funiculate (anticancer), Koeleria argentia (skin allergies), Tetrapogon villosus (antibacterial), Cynodon radiatus (eyes infection), Sporobolus nervosa (Jaundice), Enneapogon persicus (antifungal), and Panicum repens (dysfunctional cattle organs) were reported for the first time, with novel ethnoveterinary uses. The inhabitants of the study area had a strong association with their surrounding plant diversity and possessed significant knowledge on therapeutic uses of Poaceae to treat various health disorders in animals. Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibition of Fractions from Eleusine indica Leaf Extracts

Solvent fractions and decoction of Eleusine indica leaves were tested for their ability to inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), an important component of the Renin-AngiotensinAldosterone System which is a critical regulator of arterial blood pressure. The ACE inhibitory activity of each fraction was measured by employing a colorimetric assay based on the hydrolysis of histidyl-hippuryl-leucine (HHL) by ACE. Preliminary assay results revealed that the ethyl acetate fraction exhibited the highest antihypertensive activity with a percent inhibition of 51.51%. This fraction was considered for further isolation using a bioassay-guided fractionation scheme. Regulation of blood pressure by RAAS is via angiotensin release and body electrolyte content via aldosterone release. 6 One component of the RAAS is the hydrolase, AngiotensinConverting Enzyme (ACE), is responsible for converting angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a known potent vasoconstrictor. Angiotensin II stimulates both the synthesis and release of aldosterone from the adrenal cortex resulting to an increase in blood pressure via sodium retention.7 Thus, the concept of inhibiting ACE became a popular and effective therapeutic approach in treating hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. The first oral ACE inhibitor, captopril, l was considered a breakthrough in managing blood pressure and was also an early example of a structure-based drug design. 4 Other synthetic ACE inhibitors which are widely used for clinical use in the treatment of hypertension include enalapril, alcacepril, and lisinopril.8 Just like the early antihypertensive drugs, synthetic ACE inhibitors are also associated with a few side effects such as dry cough and angioedema. The current trend in anti-hypertensive drug research is finding potential ACE inhibitors from natural products that mimic synthetic ACE inhibitors and provide health benefits without adverse effects. There have been several bioactive compounds extracted from plants which were found to possess in vitro ACE inhibitory activity such as flavonoids, hydrolasable tannins, phenylpropanes, xanthones, fatty acids, terpenoids, alkaloids, proanthocyanidins, oligosaccharides, and peptide amino acids. chloride (BSC) to develop the yellow color.
