“…During recent decades, many types of bioactive glass of various compositions have been tested. Before our patient was operated on, many chemical (Karlsson et al 1989, Andersson et al 1990) and experimental studies in animals (Kangasniemi and Yli-Urpo 1990, Aho et al 1993, Suominen et al 1995 had investigated the incorporation of glass into bone. We chose hydroxylapatite as the second component of the bone substitute mixture because in the late 1980s, there were some clinical reports of patients who had been treated with it (Buchholz et al 1989, Loty et al 1990, Uchida et al 1990).…”

“…Our aim was to obtain a material with good mechanical and bioactive properties, while SCNA (in its both glassy and glass-ceramic forms) is mechanically strong but just weakly bioactive. Therefore, we decreased the content of silica (a dramatic decrease of the bioactivity kinetics was observed when glass composition exceeds 53 mol.% of silica [23]) and alumina (the presence of which is known to stabilize the glass network, thereby decreasing surface reactivity [24]), and increased the content of Na 2 O (Na + ions are known to play a key role in the early stages of the bioactivity mechanism in silicate glasses [1]). MgO was introduced because of the beneficial effect of magnesium in stimulating osteoblast activity [25].…”
