In Vivo Crushing of an Aortic Stent Enables Endovascular Repair of a Large Infrarenal Aortic Pseudoaneurysm

Abstract: Purpose: To report an unusual approach to endovascular exclusion of a large aortic pseudoaneurysm. Methods and Results: A 63-year-old male had an unsuccessful endovascular repair of an aortic anastomotic pseudoaneurysm that left an expanded, uncovered Palmaz stent lying obliquely within the aorta. After nearly 3 years, the pseudoaneurysm enlarged to 7 cm, and the patient became symptomatic. Repair of the pseudoaneurysm was accomplished by crushing the indwelling stent to allow placement of a stent-graft. Concl… Show more

“…Clinically, it already proved its interest, particularly in patients with short necks [28] or in highly specific situations [29]. With the non-invasive techniques now available, it is feasible to properly and regularly assume the biofunctionality and the biostability of such devices in vivo.…”

“…There are several reports of externally deformed, crushed, or collapsed metallic intravascular stents (1–11). Endovascular approaches to the resultant stenoses or thromboses have achieved restoration of blood flow in select cases, including hemodialysis access (10).…”
